Dental Cleanings
Dental cleanings are good practice as part of your oral hygiene. It involves the removal of plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. By routinely brushing you can help keep your teeth clean. However, it is important to see a dental hygienist who can remove hardened deposits of tartar. Even with careful brushing and flossing you it is easy to miss those hard to reach places.
Why is It Needed?
Taking care of your oral hygiene at home with regular brushing and flossing is absolutely necessary. Within a few months, bacteria start collecting around the gums and plaque can harden, then transforming itself into calculus. Professional dental cleanings are the only efficient way to eliminate these bacteria and deposits that could cause irreversible damage if they are not properly taken care of. We recommend making an appointment with a hygienist every six months, although frequency can vary from one patient to another.
What Does It Consist Of?
A professional dental cleaning consists of taking radiographs, removal of plaque and tartar, scaling, polishing, and fluoride rinse. The hygienist will also update any changes in your medical records, and show you proper brushing and flossing techniques. During the dental cleaning you will also receive a visit from the dentist to do a routine dental exam. It is generally recommended to come in for a routine cleaning once every 6 months to a year. In special cases the dentist may request to see you on a 3 or 4 months basis.
How is It Carried Out?
A dental cleaning appointment involves both the hygienist and the dentist. The hygienist is in charge of the regular cleaning, as spoke about in “What does it consist of?” section. When the regular cleaning is finished, the will dentist come in for an examination of the patient’s general dental health, which allows the prevention and the diagnosis of diseases. If there is a problem area, the dentist will make sure it is properly addressed with a treatment plan and a follow-up appointment when necessary.
