SomnoMed Snoring Appliance
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It is a serious and lifelong medical condition that affects between 18 and 30 million adults over 18 in the US; with approximately 90% of them diagnosed. OSA is a chronic, lifelong medical condition that can affect your sleep, health and quality of life. It has been linked to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, work and driving related accidents and stroke.
It can have a significant impact on quality of life, placing unnecessary strain on relationships between bed partners, family and in the workplace.
Why is It Needed?
Has your partner ever told you that you snore? Do you have chronic fatigue during the day? A decreased sex drive? These are 3 of many reasons you should be tested for OSA. Our office we can provide you with a free take home test that will monitor your sleep, including how many times you stop breathing, how much your snoring and how many times you wake up throughout the night. After the doctor gets the results, they can let you know if you would benefit from a SomnoMed appliance.
What Does It Consist Of?
Once the test have been completed and it’s been determined that you could benefit from the appliance. We set up an appointment with a hygienist to do an in office sleep and breathing test with you. This takes about 40 minutes. At this same appointment we will take dental impressions to be sent away to the lab to have your appliance custom made for you.
You will continue to work with the doctor until you’ve reached your desired results.
How is It Carried Out?
Please see beginning steps of this process under “What does this consist of?” Once the appliance is made and you’ve been wearing it for 3 weeks, we have you come back for a quick follow up. If the appliance needs to be adjusted it will be done at this appointment. 3 weeks after that we have you take home the sleep study again to see how your sleep patterns are improving. From that point you and the doctor will put a plan in place to ensure maximum results.
