Whitening
Sometimes it feels that no matter how much you brush you can’t seem to brighten your smile. The problem is not that your teeth are unclean, it’s actually staining or the natural discoloration of your teeth. Teeth can darken for a number of reasons. The most common is the natural tooth-yellowing effect from aging. Your teeth may also be stained from drinking coffee, tea or caffeine based soft drinks. Sometime the tooth also has varying shades of white, due to the growth process of the tooth or to trauma when the tooth bud was being formed. Don’t be discouraged. If you feel that your teeth are looking less than their best, Dr. Mehrabani and her team can offer you the latest in tooth whitening techniques. You can whiten your teeth at night, during the day, over the weekend or in our office!
Why is It Needed?
Although teeth position and shape are important parts of dental aesthetics, the color of our teeth also matters. The color naturally comes in various shades of light grey and yellow. However, there are a lot of daily habits that can also effect the color of our teeth such as the consumption of tobacco, drinks and foods combine to gradually alter the original color of one’s teeth through the years. Our smile is a significant component of the first impression a person projects onto others, its brightness matters. Various options exist to modify and improve the color of our patients’ teeth. We offer professional at home whitening kits with personalized trays and in office whitening which also come with an at home kit.
What Does It Consist Of?
We look to provide our patients with long-term results and this is why the treatment we recommend using peroxide treatment. Combination of in-clinic and at-home procedures is more efficient and usually produces a steeper curb of bleaching. The method consists of the daily application of a peroxide-based product through the use of a personalized trays. The general length of the treatment varies between 10 and 21 days.
How is It Carried Out?
Dr. Mehrabani or Dr. Gordon will first examine the patient’s mouth to see if he or she can realistically expect concrete results from a teeth whitening treatment. If this is the case, a customized mouth guards will be produced in our dental lab and the patient will be given the trays and all of the necessary materials to perform daily, at-home bleaching treatments for a predetermined period of time. If you choose to go with a combination treatment we recommend using the at home treatment for a few days to prepare your teeth. Then will we schedule a one-hour, in-clinic bleaching session. Although results can vary from one patient to another for mixed reasons, the change is usually substantial and it can be measured with the help of a detailed color scale.
